Without all that weight, it can just focus on telling a good story. And that is precisely what allows it to succeed. There are no Skywalkers and no Palpatines, no applause moments when Chewbacca saunters in. Knights of the Old Republic has none of that. It was designed to “be a satisfying conclusion to a story that’s been going on since 1977”. It was not designed to “be a good movie”. It was, for many, just overloaded with the weight of eight other movies, decades of controversy, dozens of characters, untold fan controversies and one giant, unwieldy story. Rise of Skywalker, for those that hated it, faltered due to the exact sorts of pitfalls that Knights of the Old Republic avoided.
Knights of the Old Republic shows how it’s done. The best way to do this, in my opinion, is to head into the annals of Star Wars history, which are broad and wide enough to start fresh while still giving fans handholds to get on board with. You can even make traditional, Jedi-focused Star Wars stories without a single recognizable character.
